On the Southwest coast between the vineyards of Bordeaux & the châteaux of the Loire Valley is the Charente-Maritime. Its superb climate (2,250 hours of sunshine per year – 2nd only to the South of France) makes it attractive from early spring to late autumn. It boasts 300 miles of coastline, fine sandy beaches backed by fragrant pine forests and lively resorts. La Rochelle, Royan and the islands of Oléron, Aix and Ré provide year-round interest. Inland are Saintes and Cognac plus vast wooded valleys, the Poitou fens and Marais Poitevin with tranquil canals, the valley of Vienne and Charente rivers & of course the vineyards at Blaye and Bordeaux.
